In-Home Respite Care in Austin
You've been the one at the house every evening and every weekend. Respite care puts a caregiver from Sovereign Serenity Care in the home for a set block of time, so you can go to your own doctor, sleep, or sit through a whole church service without checking your phone.
We provide non-medical in-home respite care for families from Killeen through Austin to San Antonio.
Or call (512) 888-9105.
What in-home respite care is
Respite is a planned break for the family caregiver. Your parent stays home, in their own chair, with their own coffee mug, and one of our caregivers stays with them while you're out. That can be during the day, in the evening, or overnight while you sleep.
During a respite visit, a caregiver can:
- Keep your parent company with conversation, cards, photos, or a walk to the mailbox
- Keep the day on its usual track, from lunch at the normal time to the afternoon show
- Give reminders and cueing, like "Time for lunch" or "Your sweater's on the chair"
- Help with meals and keep them company while they eat
- Do light housekeeping, such as dishes and tidying up
- Stay with your parent so you can step out
Respite care here is non-medical. Our caregivers don't give medication, do wound care, or provide any other medical care. A caregiver can remind your parent that it's time for their pills. They don't hand out doses. If your parent needs nursing or therapy, that stays with their doctor and home health team, and we can work around those visits.
Who respite care is for
Respite is for the person doing the caregiving. Usually that's a daughter or son, a spouse, or the one sibling who lives closest.
It tends to fit when:
- You drive up I-35 from Round Rock or down from Kyle every evening and haven't had a night off in weeks
- Your mother shouldn't be alone, but you have a job, kids, or appointments of your own
- Your dad is living with memory loss and you need a few hours where someone else is watching the stove
- You're a spouse, you're tired, and you'd like to get to H-E-B without rushing back
- You've been up at 2 a.m. with your mom for weeks and need one full night's sleep while someone else listens for her
A break isn't giving up on caregiving. It's how families keep a parent at home longer without wearing out the person holding it together.
How scheduling works
It starts with a free in-home consultation. Someone from our team comes to the house and talks with you and your parent about what you need covered, what you don't, and how the day usually runs.
Before the first visit, three things need to be in place:
- Signed care documents
- An assessment done by Sovereign Serenity Care
- An individualized service plan that we write from that assessment
Goal: Care starts within 48 hours
That's a goal, not a promise for every family. If something holds up the start, we'll tell you.
Our office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A 24/7 answering service takes calls outside those hours, so you can call (512) 888-9105 any time.
Paying for respite care
Respite care is private pay. If your parent has a long-term care insurance policy that requires it, we'll invoice the insurer. We don't accept Medicaid or VA benefits.

Respite care questions
What does a respite caregiver do during a visit?
They keep your parent company, keep the usual routine going, give reminders and cueing, help with meals, do light housekeeping, and stay with your parent while you're out. It's non-medical care, so they don't give medication or provide medical care.
Can a respite caregiver give my mom her medication?
No. A caregiver can remind her that it's time and cue her through the routine she already has. Giving medication is a medical task, and we don't provide it.
